What Is a Sitemap And Why Is It Important for your website

What is a Sitemap and Why is it important?

There are two major uses of having a sitemap to your website. The first being, helping users find the content in your site which is not easily found in your website navigation. The second one, helping the search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo discover the content in your website and index them in their directories which enhances your website's chances to show up in in search results for searches made of relevant keywords which your website is based on. That's the brief overview on what a sitemap can do to your website. If you want to get some in-depth knowledge about it. Read along.

We are going to discuss this topic in two perspectives:

1. The Search Engine.
2. The Users.

1. For The Search Engines

Sitemap plays a major role in getting your website indexed by Google and other major search engines like Bing, Yahoo, etc. Simply said a sitemap is a structured way of presenting data of your website to Google's robots(spiders) so that they can index your website which helps you rank higher in Google search. Well, simply adding a sitemap won't get you to the top of google search but it plays its part in helping your site get to the top of search.

2. For The Users

Often a majority of users leave a website after they are done with reading the content that they came to read. This is not good. As a webmasters we need to enable users to read more and explore more of your website which lets them stay on the website for a longer time. Providing a good site navigation plays a major role in engaging users that visit your website. But not all of the content is accessible from the navigation, there are many factors why they cant be accessible. By proving a content sitemap you as a webmaster help the users to engage and access all the content on your website.

This has two major advantages:

a) Increase in website traffic:

This is obvious right, more the engagement from the users, more the traffic. Which in turn helps you to make more money via advertising or any other medium of earning which you choose to earn from.

b) Loyal Users:

When users are given a chance to read more and more of your content and hopefully they like it, then they are your potential loyal customers. These are the people who will come back again and read or watch the content that you create. They might even signup for your email subscription list which is a great way to market your content.
